White House defends IRS handling, McConnell asserts 'culture of intimidation'

By Michael O'Brien, Political Reporter, NBC News

A top White House official defended President Barack Obama's handling of information that the IRS had targeted conservative groups seeking nonprofit status, warning Republicans in Congress against playing politics with the revelations.

"There is no question that Republicans are trying to make political hay here," senior White House aide Dan Pfeiffer said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Also appearing on the program, the top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell, said the IRS scandal was evidence of a "culture of intimidation" within the administration, but struggled to marshal evidence to support that assertion.

"I don't think we know what the facts are," he told moderator David Gregory when challenged as to whether he had any evidence that Obama ordered the targeting of conservatives. "The investigation has just begun, so I'm not going to reach a conclusion about what we may find."
